Joining this league of the bezel-less smartphones is the new flagship from Xiaomi — the Xiaomi Mi MiX 2. Launched in India for a price of Rs 35,999, this is the first premium phone from Xiaomi to sport a full-screen display and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor. Now that it’s officially launched, we went over it and here are few of the incredible features of the Xiaomi Mi MiX 2 that make it a worthy flagship device.
1. Stunning Design
When it comes to the design, the Mi MiX 2 packs in a revolutionary bezel-less design. In doing so, it has adopted some incredible design elements like moving the camera to the bottom, resizing the antenna clearance area, and the LCD driver IC, and embracing a piezoelectric earpiece and an ultrasonic proximity sensor. Unlike the recent smartphones such as the Essential Phone, Samsung S8 or the iPhone X, the Mi MiX 2 goes all-in, removing the top bezels or the top notch. Given that most of the users give special attention to the top of the phone, this design change is a welcome move. When the screen goes off, the display beautifully blends with the device giving the phone an overall black look. Compared to the OnePlus 5, the Galaxy Note8 or Xiaomi’s own Mi A1, you’d need to squint hard enough to actually see where the bezels start. When it comes to the build, the Mi MiX 2 sports a stunning design made with aerospace-grade aluminum alloy with curved ceramic at the corners. The phone maintains a sleek look at just 7.7-mm. If you recall, Xiaomi’s last offering, the Mi A1, measured 7.3mm. What’s more – the gold accent on the rear camera, fingerprint sensor, and the logo give it an even more stylish edge.
2. Incredible Full-Screen Display
As discussed above, the Mi MiX 2 also features a bezel-less display, following close on the heels of the first-generation Mi MiX. Adding to this highlight is the new 18:9 full-screen display fitted into a 5.99-inch IPS LCD screen. Lately, the 18:9 ratio has become synonymous with all the major flagships, including the LG V30. This aspect ratio increases the canvas area by almost 12.5% and, thus, makes using apps like Google Maps incredibly easy. Thanks to the bigger display, the Mi MiX 2 actually feels smaller than its predecessor. As per the figures released by Xiaomi, the Mi MiX 2 is 7% smaller and 4% shorter than the Apple iPhone8. Again, comparing it with this year’s popular flagship, the OnePlus 5, it feels the same size-wise. So, we can safely say that Xiaomi has fitted in a 5.99-inch screen into a 5.5-inch frame, similar to what Honor has done to the Honor 9i. With the front chin of the phone getting smaller by 12%, the Mi MiX 2 is expected to bring in better user experience courtesy the larger usable area.
3. Corning Gorilla Glass Protection
When you picture the Mi MiX 2, you can’t help but notice its delicate nature. Thankfully, it packs Corning Gorilla Glass 4 in the front and a scratch-resistant ceramic rear. As touted by Xiaomi, this specially crafted ceramic can withstand up to 240 tons of pressure. However, it goes without saying that it’s unapologetically fragile, hence, be sure to get a sturdy case for it if you buy this flagship phone.
4. Snappy Processor and Ample Storage
Combine these three terms – 2017, Flagships and Processor – and it automatically screams Qualcomm Snapdragon 835. Yes, the Xiaomi Mi MiX2 is powered by the Snapdragon 835 and 6GB of RAM. Given the amount of information, songs or videos floating around on the Internet and the Play Store, it doesn’t take much time for an Android phone to fill up. So, when it comes to the built-in storage, it packs in the current ubiquitous standard of 128GB, that the 2017 flagships like the OnePlus 5 and the LG V30+ have been known to carry. Introduction of the Snapdragon 835 in a Xiaomi phone also makes it the first phone to sport the 10-nm FinFET processor in India from the maker.
5. 4-Axis OIS Camera
There’s no gimmick of dual cameras in the Mi MiX 2. However, it makes up for the loss of portrait modes or wide-angle photos with its incredible 4-axis OIS (optical image stabilization) technique. Most of the phone camera features the conventional 2-axis OIS, which can handle only rotational movements. On the contrary, the 4-axis OIS can handle both rotational and transversal movements. This results in steady, blur-free and accurate pictures even in low light or when you are shooting from a moving car. Specs wise, it sports a 12-megapixel Sony IMX386 sensor with 1.25µ large pixels and a 5-megapixel selfie shooter.
6. Quick Charge 3.0
Xiaomi phones are making huge improvements this year in India. Starting with the introduction of USB Type-C and Quick Charge 3.0 in Mi Max 2, the wave seems to have caught on with the Mi MiX 2. The new model also features Quick Charge 3.0 and can easily buy you a couple of hours worth of battery life just after charging for a few minutes.
7. Global LTE Support
The Mi MiX 2 can support up to a whopping 43 bands in 6 network modes. Besides, the network support in 226 global regions truly makes it a global phone. This essentially translates into a traveler-friendly phone, which will work in almost every country and region.
Xiaomi Mi MiX 2: A True Flagship?
Being a Xiaomi flagship, the Mi MiX 2 sports a variety of notched-up features such as multi-functional NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, VoLTE Support, UFS 2.1 for storage, and MIUI 9 beta based on Android Nougat. But yeah, it skips a few classic Xiaomi features such as the IR Blaster, FM, and the headphone jack. In a nutshell, the Xiaomi Mi MiX 2 is great in looks, design, and performance and in doing so, it does cut a few corners. So, will you buy the Mi MiX 2? You know where the comment section is.
